Retro Christmas Jumper Designs: Fair Isle, Nordic and 80s Ski Looks
Updated 24 August 2026 · 5 min read
In short: Retro Christmas jumper designs draw on Fair Isle banding, Nordic snowflake repeats, 1980s ski-lodge colour blocking and vintage varsity lettering — all of which suit knitted-in production and group branding.
Retro is the safest way to make a group jumper that people wear beyond December. These four directions all translate well into knit and all leave a clean space for a logo.
1. Fair Isle bands
Horizontal patterned bands in two or three colours, originating from the Shetland tradition. Endlessly adaptable: your crest or a product motif can be worked into the repeat so it reads as pattern rather than branding.
2. Nordic snowflake
Large eight-point snowflakes on a solid ground, usually cream against a deep colour. Calm, premium and the most photogenic of the four.
3. 80s ski lodge
Diagonal colour blocking, zigzags and mountain silhouettes in saturated period colours. Best suited to teams and clubs that want energy in the design rather than restraint.
4. Vintage varsity
A large knitted letter or founding year on a plain body with contrast tipping at cuffs and hem. Ideal for clubs, societies and alumni groups where the name is the design.
Choosing colours that stay retro
- Two strong colours plus one cream or off-white ground reads vintage; four or more reads novelty.
- Muted, slightly desaturated tones age better than fluorescent ones.
- Check contrast between your logo colour and the ground so the mark stays legible at distance.
Our designer lets you pick up to three colours and see them applied across four different knit layouts, so you can compare a Fair Isle treatment against a Nordic one before committing.
